Forest Corridor Pedra Talhada

The Pedra Talhada Biological Reserve was created by the Brazilian government in 1989 together with Nordesta, with the aim of preserving one of the last areas of primary forest in north-east Brazil. The primary forest of Pedra Talhada represents a small fragment, about 5%, of the once-great Atlantic forest that covered the entire 6,000km of the Brazilian coast.

In order to support the preservation of these 4,500 hectares of forest, Nordesta is planning on planting a forest corridor around the reserve. The reforestaton of surrounding former farming lands means that the Pedra Talhada Biological Reserve can be a real biodiversity refuge while also preserving water resources for 300,000 inhabitants of the region.

The north-east of Brazil is the most economically disadvantaged of the entire country. An increase in forest cover by planting trees will help with returns in farming by restoring soils, planting fruit frees, and establishing apiaries.

Project objective

  • Plant trees
Planting this type of forest corridor connects this forest with other major ones elsewhere. This connection ensures the survival of both forests, their water sources, and biodiversity, while restablishing genetic exchanges between flora and fauna.

  • Set up bee hives
Bees pollinate about 80% of all flowering plants, which are a key component in both animal and human nutrition. The presence of bees in forests therefore helps planted trees to grow, and ensures native flowering trees remain a steady food source for many animal species. Additionally, local inhabitants can collect honey for their families.

  • Raise awareness of the environment
In order to ensure the survival of these forests, it is important to raise awareness among local populations. Nordesta works directlz with adolescents and schools along the edges of the Pedra Talhada Biological Reserve.
