Huarango forest used to be common in the desert surrounding the Peruvian city of Ica, capturing seasonal floodwaters and making the desert bloom. Now 98% of the forest is gone - cut down and turned to charcoal for use in the city.
In 2008-2009 Trees for Cities worked with local partners not only to reintroduce the huarango tree, but to change public perceptions as to its importance. By planting 1,750 trees in schools and gardens, running educational workshops, supporting the annual Huarango Festival and marketing huarango fruit products, Trees for Cities are helping to ensure the survival of this remarkable tree and the region that depends on it.
