Kibera is the 2nd largest slum in Africa housing approximately 2.5 million people. That’s 1,500 people living in a space the size of a football pitch. 50% of residents have no formal employment and live either near or under the poverty line. Through our project, ‘Greening the Slum’, we will inspire local communities and young people throughout Kibera, to bring about a positive change to their environment. We will increase local awareness about the importance of trees in urban areas, and enhance the quality of life for all residents. 15,000 trees will be planted across Kibera slum. Tree and vegetable nurseries will be established in schools to provide vegetables, fruit, medicinal and indigenous tree products to residents whilst information about environmental issues will be disseminated through mediums such as posters, leaflets, a website and radio adverts to local youths and residents of Kibera. Field trips will also be held to forest-protected areas to inspire the public about the need to protect trees and the environment.
“During the early times, I used to see on television how Professor Wangari was beaten up by the police in her efforts to guard the environment. Now I want to study Environmental Science at University after high school so I will be able to help in addressing environmental issues.”
